Has your kitchen sink seen better days? We wouldn’t be surprised, because it’s one of the hardest working parts of your home. On the other hand, perhaps that old style or design just needs a modern update, or you’re finding that you need a bigger or smaller one – or it’s just worn, damaged, stained and rusted. No matter why you’re interested in plumbing in a kitchen sink, you need to get it done correctly – so let’s get started!
How to install a kitchen sink
But first things first: are you a QBCC-licensed plumber? If not, you are quite limited in the plumbing work you’re allowed to do for yourself at home, even if you have the skills, tools and confidence. Installing a sink normally falls under the regulated ‘notifiable work’ category, so if you’re not sure if plumbing a sink for yourself will get you in hot water, check with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission to be sure.
If you’re proceeding, here’s how it’s done:
1. Remove the old sink
You can’t do your new kitchen sink plumbing without ripping out the old one. Start the job by turning off the mains water, and then opening the taps to drain every last drop out. You’ll then need to disconnect all the tubes and pipes, unscrew the sink clips and then use your muscles to loosen and pull the sink clear of the counter.
