Hot water system not working properly? It’s tempting to bite the bullet straight away and call in the professionals. But a little do-it-yourself knowledge about what might have gone wrong won’t hurt at all, will it? In this piece, we’re going to take a dive into why the most common of all hot water types and technologies – the electric hot water system – might be giving you grief.
Why is my electric hot water system not working?
First things first: what is an electric hot water system? We’re mainly talking here about the ones you’re undoubtedly familiar with – a tank-based system that heats water with heating elements that heat and then store the water for when you need it. But while it may sound simple, there are actually quite a few things that can go wrong – and in many cases, inevitably will. So let’s do some electric hot water system troubleshooting.
1. Failed heating element
When this happens, or the electric element is on the way out, you may notice your hot water system not heating properly – or at all. The good news is that it can be replaced, and depending on the hot water system brand and model can be surprisingly cheap. The same is true for faulty thermostats, too.
