Throughout last 500 years, whisky has received much attention from the innovative brewers all around the world. From its country of origin in Scotland to the all four corners of the world, a wide variety and types of whisky were made. Here are some of the basic types of whisky, separated in different groups.
Malt Whisky: Malt whisky positions among the best whiskies and is mainly produced in Scotland. It may only be made using malted barley and distilled in pot stills. Grain Whisky: Made from malted barley, mostly from Scotland and Ireland, this whisky can contain any grain variety, also a mixture of it. This can be distilled more in comparison to malt whisky in column stills, yet it contains fewer flavours. Blended Whisky: Blended Whisky can contain any blend of various whiskies (malt, grain). Most mixes contain more grain whisky than malt whisky. The higher the malt whisky proportion, the better the mix will be. Blended Whisky comes mainly from Scotland or Ireland. Single Pot Still Whiskey: This special kind of whisky is from Ireland. It might contain grain, also unmalted grain, however, it is exclusively distilled in pot stills. Rye Whiskey: This kind of whisky is mainly produced in the United States, and still today in Canada. It contains no less than 51% rye and must also be matured in oak barrels for at least 2 years. Corn Whiskey: Mainly originated from the US, it must be made using 100% corn. Since these whiskies taste moderately neutral they are generally used in blends.
