From Italy to the US: The World’s Most Popular Used Cars |
Posted: October 18, 2018 |
When you travel, you must’ve noticed that once you leave the airport and hit the road, it is on the streets that you really feel you’re in another country. There is something different on the road, and those are the vehicles. Each country around the world reflects different trends and tastes and often there’s a car brand (or two) that really stands out and that most people prefer over others.
Even though we would all love to buy a brand new vehicle, it’s more affordable and often better value for money when they are purchased second-hand. Here are some of the trends in second hand car markets, as seen around the world.
Australia
Most Aussies have their heart set on the Mazda CX-5. This Medium SUV was their first choice, whereas when it comes to small cars, the Hyundai Accent came first. The Ford Ranger and Holden Commodore are also very popular, too.
Considering the fact that this is one hot continent, especially around Christmas, Aussies have very strong opinions about the best colour for their car. Namely, they prefer lighter colours due to high temperatures, though even that varies depending on the state.
United Kingdom
The Ford Fiesta reigns supreme on British streets with over 92.000 sold. Among the red double-deckers and black cabs, you’ll often spot one of these cars in various colours (black, silver and blue are dominant) zipping around from place to place. The Fiesta managed to outsell the Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio combined, an impressive feat no doubt influenced by its comparatively low price of £12,000.
Italy
Still in Europe, Italians have plenty of choices when it comes to buying used cars. Their favourite choice comes from a local manufacturer - Fiat . The same company that also owns Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo, to name a few, also produces the humble Fiat Panda, which is number one compared to other Fiat models. Its sales are almost double that compared to the car that came in second place – the Fiat Grande Punto, whereas the regular Punto comes in third. Volkswagen with its Golf model is in the fifth place, a commendably high position considering the absolute dominance of Fiat in the local marketplace.
The USA
Across the Atlantic, the situation continues to favour the Italian automaker. On average, it is the Fiat Chrysler 500 that is the car which sold the fastest, taking only 22 days to find itself a buyer. Though small on space it is loaded with technology like heated seats, mirrors, a push-button shifter, rear parking assistance, and even a satellite radio. All things that appeal to the American buyer, and even more importantly it comes in at just over $9000.
South Africa
While both Americans and Italians are fond of Italian cars, South Africans generally prefer German quality, i.e. the venerable Volkswagen. Out of nine categories for the best second-hand car in South Africa, the German company had 9 finalists. When considering best value for money, the car that takes the spot is the Mazda CX3 2.0 Individual. As for the best car on a tight budget The Renault Kwid 1.0 Dynamique 5-door is most widely driven (and one can see many other Renaults on the street).
Ireland
The Ford Focus was most sold by independent dealers in Ireland, while franchise dealers mostly sold the Hyundai Tucson. In either category, it seems that fuel efficiency was the most important factor when it came to purchasing, as all of the top models were diesel variants.
There is more to used cars that meets the eye. These statistics tell us a lot about the country itself and its citizens. We can notice that priorities differ greatly, and what is an excellent ride in one country is not even remotely considered in others. Not many Australians will opt for a black car, but Italians and American drivers certainly have a lot of common topics to discuss.
